nardia2 For all schools and educators – Out of Slavery is an invaluable resource for the National Curriculum for History and for Citizenship as well as a vital source of reference for anyone working with children and young people of black Caribbean origin.

In a system where children from families of black African and Caribbean origin are left disaffected and with unfulfilled potential, all schools are being encouraged to incorporate black history into the curriculum. An awareness of the past is needed to increase understanding of the present.

More than one million people living in Britain are of either black African or black Caribbean descent. These people are perhaps more misunderstood and discriminated against than any other ethic minority group – yet their history is deeply enmeshed with that of the people of the British Isles. The story is both shocking and fascinating - and it provides a key to many of the issues facing black people in Britain in the twenty-first century.

Drawing on recent research, Out of Slavery offers a much-needed key text and wealth of primary source material to support the teaching of this highly significant chapter of British and world history. The book offers a highly accessible overview of a story that spans over 500 years and three continents – from early civilisations in Africa… through the horrors of slavery and the transatlantic slave trade, emancipation and immigration…to the rioting and racism that have continued into the twenty-first century. It explores key issues and themes including:

  • the economic and social conditions that led to the establishment of the slave trade
  • the factors that enabled slavery to persist for so long – and what allowed it to end
  • the effects of slavery on both slaves and slave owners
  • the changing relationship between Britain and the Caribbean
  • relationships between people from different races

This book offers:

  • A clear, accessible overview
  • A wealth of visual and textual primary source material
  • Mini-biographies of black historical figures
  • Questions to encourage reflection
  • Suggestions for further research
National Curriculum

Out of Slavery supports the National Curriculum at Key Stage 3 and is especially relevant to the Core Study Unit: Britain 1750 – 1900. It also links with the Citizenship Programme of Study, in particular knowledge and understanding about becoming informed citizens.
